Dr. Maya Angelou was Oprah’s guest on “Super Soul Sunday,” which is a weekly TV show that features exclusive interviews and all-new conversations between Oprah Winfrey and top thinkers, authors, filmmakers and spiritual leaders.

Dr. Maya Angelou, who recently wrote her newest memoir, Mom & Me & Mom, sat down with her “spiritual daughter” Oprah Winfrey to discuss her book as well as to impart wisdom to live by.

Here are the nuggets of wisdom she shared:

“When you know better, you do better.”

“I know I’m a good mother. I care and I dare. I care enough to let you go, but I dare enough to follow you.”

“Words are things.”

“Forgive yourself for every failure because you tried to do the right thing.”

“Courage is the most important of all the virtues, because without courage you can’t practice any other virtue consistently. You can practice any virtue erratically, but nothing consistently without courage.”

Her Favorite Things

Maya Angelou’s favorite word: “Love”

Maya Angelou likes the sound of the word: “Murmur”

Maya Angelou’s greatest accomplishment: “Birth of my son”

Dr. Angelou returns to “Super Soul Sunday” for part 2 on Sunday, May 19, 2013.

It isn’t the recognition that shocks them, it’s the adjective the precedes it, “first-ever.”

It’s her eight time on Broadway, Tyson is starring in Horton Foote’s 1953 drama “The Trip to Bountiful” playing at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre. Tyson is nominated for a best lead actress in a play Tony Award. It’s the Harlem native’s first time on Broadway since 1983, when she played in the revival of “The Corn is Green.”

Tyson was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance in the 1972 film Sounder and in 1974, she won two Emmy Awards for “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman.”

The play has been nominated for a total of four Tonys, including Best Featured Actress in a Play by Condola Rashad, Best Revival of a Play and Best Sound Design of a Play.

The 2013 Tony Awards will be broadcast live from Radio City Music Hall on CBS June 9th at 8:00 ET/PT.

Kerry Washington attended the LA premiere of Peeples in a Black and White gown from Narciso Rodriguez‘s Fall 2013 collection. She topped the look off with black and white Christian Louboutin heels and toted a Vince Camuto clutch. She had a hint of a red low light streak in her hair and wore it in a 1920′s Great Gatsby inspired hair do. We thought she was beautiful and successfully stylish in this look. We love.

A perennial form of fashion, punk was birthed in the early 1970s, it continues to influence fashion today. The exhibition features nearly 100 designs for men and women, including original punk garments and recent, directional fashion that examines how haute couture and ready-to-wear glean from punk.

The parallel relationships: punk’s “do-it-yourself” and couture’s”made-to-measure” are examined, the seven galleries will be organized around the materials, techniques, and embellishments associated with the anti-establishment style. Themes include New York and London, which tell punk’s origin as a story reminiscent of a tale of two cities, followed by Clothes for Heroes and four manifestations of the D.I.Y. aesthetic—Hardware, Bricolage, Graffiti and Agitprop, and Destroy.

It’s presented as an “immersive multimedia, multisensory experience, the clothes will be animated with period music videos and soundscaping audio techniques.”

After years of being the hilarious side kick, Robinson will now tackle his first lead role in the new comedy, Peeples.

The hilarious film centers around Wade Walker (Robinson’s character) who seeks to win the approval of Grace Peeples’ (Kerry Washington) family. Comedy ensues as Robinson struggles to fit in with the elitist family and prove his love for Washington.

We recently spoke with Robinson who spoke about his first starring role in Peeples.

How were you introduced to the film Peeples?

The writer/director Tina Gordon Chism will tell you we had a meeting to pitch the movie. Tina could only meet after I had a long day taping “The Office.” We met again and she ran the story down a bit more. I couldn’t ask for a better leading role.

You have co-starred in other major films. This is your first leading role. What was the difference? The difference was that I refused to let the pressure of being a leading man get to me. The cast was great. We all bonded together. We have to get this out there and see how the people respond. We would love to get this entire crew back together.

This new musical charts Motown founder Berry Gordy’s incredible journey from featherweight boxer to the heavyweight music mogul who launched the careers of Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye and many more pop music icons. Motown shattered barriers, shaped our lives and made us all move to the same beat.

The story of a five women’s bond and a family’s history as shared through some of the most timeless music of the last 100 years, “Sistas” is the work of playwright Dorothy Marcic. Produced by three-time Tony winner, Hinton Battle and directed by Kenneth Ferrone, the production became a sensation after a successful run at the Midtown International Theatre Festival.

The story centers on five women: sisters Gloria, Simone and Roberta, their white sister-in-law Heather and Simone’s daughter, Tamika; they discuss their family’s complex history. In preparation for the funeral of the family matriarch, they revisit the pleasure and pain in their mother’s history, their own childhoods and the complex relationships they have with each other today. Their stories are told through the popular music that provided their lives’ soundtrack. From Billie Holiday to Patti LaBelle, from The Supremes toKelis—the music and the performances of the five leads effectively convey the ups and downs of their African American womanhood. Youthful Tamika (Lexi Rhoades) sits and learns family history and life lessons from her mother, the pragmatic Simone (Badia Farha), as well as her aunts; Bible-thumping Gloria (Tracey Conyer Lee), the rebellious Roberta (Jennifer Fouche) and the well-meaning but naïve Heather (Amy Goldberger.)

Rhoades praises the production for its effective portrayal of black women via four very different personalities. “I think it’s very effective [because] they all exist,” she says. “We’re very careful not to do caricatures of those archetypes. It’s so important to bring the integrity of the black woman to each facet.”

For Badia Farha, who recently joined the cast as Simone after the departure of longtime cast member April Nixon, the play’s musical variety immediately caught her attention. “I walked past the theater one day casually and saw the flier up and read that the music hadMa Rainey and Bessie Smith, Beyonce and Alicia Keys and [I said] ‘What is this?’ It sounded so interesting. I [knew] that was a show I’d love to do. The music really drew me in.”

Fouche is the only original cast member currently still with the production. Her Roberta character is, in many ways the heart and soul of the story. “Women come up to me after seeing ‘Sistas’ and say, ‘I went through that or I know someone that went through that’ and they tell me, ‘Thank you because you did it honestly.’ It has to be real [because] that’s real for somebody. And in ‘Sistas,’ every one of these stories is real.”

“It’s an American story,” says Farha. “It’s a story about black Americans. I think the younger generation is lacking the [knowledge] of their heritage. This show pulls from it. You have the older sisters teaching the young one. This isn’t just the story of an African American family but African American families.” Rhoades echoes that sentiment. “I think everybody learned something from this show–every single actor.”

“There are very few majority black casts on Broadway,” Fouche shares. “That means something to me, as a black actor and as a woman. There’s something very spiritual about getting a group of women together.”

It’s his 13th studio album and we’re really loving LL Cool J’s Authentic. For goodness sake, he’s teamed up with fellow industry legend, über-guitarist Eddie Van Halen on the rap/rock anthem ”We’re the Greatest,” which also features Travis Barker of Blink 182 on drums.

“This album was born out of my true love for music and I knew Eddie shared that same vision for authentic music … I was humbled to watch a genius at work and collaborate with such a legendary and visionary artist as Eddie Van Halen, and to bring our two worlds together, was an exciting opportunity. I am thrilled he was up for the ride,” LL shares during a recent interview.

Authentic is star-studded; it also features Snoop, Monica, Seal, Bootsy Collins, Chuck D, Earth, Wind & Fire and Brad Paisley.

It wouldn’t be authentic or LL Cool J if there wasn’t something for the ladies to love about cool James Todd Smith. He delivers with R&B jams, ”Something About You,” “Between the Sheetz” and “New Love” (featuring Charlie Wilson).
