Zadie Smith: White Teeth

White Teeth is a family saga set in London and moving back and forth in time between the end of the Second World War and the 1990’s. The story focuses on three families: the Bangladeshi Iqbals, the Anglo-Caribbean Joneses, and the English Chalfens. Samad Iqbal moves to England after the war, and decides to look up the only person he knows in the whole of the British Isles, his old army friend Archie Jones.

White Teeth is not just funny; it’s also rich, layered, and dead serious even as it makes you burst laughing out loud. Plus it’s full of literary allusions, which are here not for the sake of making the author appear clever.

Chick Webb and the Music that Changed America

The Savoy King: Chick Webb and the Music that Changed America, is one of the most impressive you’ll find.  Bill Cosby, Jeff Goldblum, Janet Jackson, Danny Glover, Charlie Watts, John Legend and Billy Crystal all lend their voices and time to the documentary about the life of big band jazz musician Chick Webb. Webb was very popular and influential as the house band for the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem, the first nightclub to be integrated. The movie lays out Webb’s history and his role in American jazz during that era.

Luckily when the leggy beauty revealed to photographer Dusan Reljin that she recently took up pole dancing, he and his wife had the good sense to capture Chanel’s new hobby on film for NOWNESS. Kahlil Joseph directs "Until the Quiet Comes"

An extraordinary, disturbing, beautiful short film, set to the music of Flying Lotus’s new album Until The Quiet Comes, by the startlingly talented director Kahlil Joseph. It’s a bit morbid, and features some kind of life after death-type experience toward the end, yet, people seem to be unresponsive to the action the camera is filming.

The film features clips from three tracks from the album, is an unique and wholly poetic vision. It's an interesting flick, and we're loving the new music from Flying Lotus. The new album 'Until The Quiet Comes' is released on October 1st/2nd on Warp.

New Read: One Day It'll Make Sense

You don't have to like hip-hop, you just have to appreciate openness and honesty. That openness allows new ideas to take root in his soul, and through the lens of those new values he his open to reexamining his life and seeing a better version of himself.

One Day It'll Make Sense is in a very intriguing format. Each chapter begins with a letter from Common addressed to an important person in his life from his daughter to his close friend and collaborator Kanye West, from his former love Erykah Badu to you, the reader. Through it all, Common emerges as a man in full. Common’s story is the prime example of no matter what you’ve gone through, one day it’ll all make sense.

So revealing and so honest, reading Common's memoir really created such a nuanced and real portrait of him as a person. He openly talks about his growth not just as an artist, but as a man and is real about his struggles in his relationships, fatherhood and career. You finish the book having so much more respect for him. I applaud him for laying it all out there in that way. I highly recommend this book to young men.

AlunaGeorge Showcases Art in "Your Drums, Your Love"

Here’s a hot new song from London duo AlunaGeorge,“Your Drums, Your Love”.It is directed by Henry Scholfield and sees Aluna and George in a gallery space filled with the ever-evolving work of the much in demand London based illustrator Arran Gregory.

Arran Gregory showcases his life size fiber glass wolf sculpture. Arran’s wolf could remind you of some old fashioned video-games or a graphic rendering, but at the same time it is out there in the real world. Its image has been idealised and digitalised. But the idea of the wild, of the perfection of nature is still there.

The new 'Your Drums, Your Love' single is available from 15th October. Keep your eyes peeled for a forthcoming debut album in Spring 2013.
